A graduate of McGill University and the Architectural Association, Dr. Ian MacBurnie is Director of Program Mobility and Associate Professor in Ryerson University’s Department of Architectural Science, where he lectures on housing and urbanism, instructs design studio, and coordinates undergraduate design thesis. An award-winning academic and registered architect (Québec), Dr. MacBurnie is co-recipient of the 2007-2008 ACSA/AIA Housing Design Education Award and member of Ryerson University’s winning entry in Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation’s 2007 Equilibrium (Net Zero) housing design competition. In 2009, MacBurnie led a multidisciplinary team of architects, engineers, and students in the design and construction of a kindergarten school in Ghana. In August, 2007, he led an international team to the Kashmir region of Pakistan in a design/build initiative to re-house a group of earthquake-displaced families. Dr. MacBurnie’s research interests are in the areas of housing, urbanism, and urban design. He is presently writing a book for Routledge on urban townhouses (with Dr. Avi Friedman), and is completing the manuscript for The City and the American Dream, a wide-ranging exploration of culture and urbanism in 20th Century America. Ian MacBurnie is Canadian representative of S333 Architecture + Urbanism, an award-winning practice based in London, UK.
